Awareness of neurodiversity, and the natural variations in how brains function, such as autism, ADHD, and dyslexia has grown significantly in recent years. As we shift away from a medical model that pathologizes these differences and focuses on perceived deficits, therapy is evolving too. Increasingly, therapy is embracing an affirming approach that recognises and values the unique strengths of neurodivergent individuals.
What is Neurodiversity?
Neurodiversity acknowledges that neurological differences are normal and meaningful variations of the human experience, not flaws or disorders to be fixed. Neurodivergent individuals may experience the world in ways that differ from the majority, but these differences can bring unique strengths, insights, and creativity, alongside challenges.
Why Traditional Therapy May Fall Short
Traditional therapeutic models often centre around neurotypical norms. As a result, they can unintentionally encourage masking, compliance, or conformity, inadvertently pressuring clients to fit in rather than thrive as their authentic selves. This approach can sadly leave neurodivergent people feeling misunderstood, unseen and invalidated, rather than supported.
What is Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapeutic Support?
Neurodiversity-affirming therapy respects and values neurodivergent identities. It does not aim to normalise people or change who they are. Instead, it creates space for self-understanding, growth, and compassion, and focuses on what is most meaningful and helpful to you.
Core principles of affirming support include:
- Respecting identity: Validating neurodivergent identities as important and worthy.
- Listening to lived experience: Prioritising the voices and perspectives of neurodivergent people.
- Rejecting masking: Supporting clients to live authentically, rather than promoting the need to mask or camouflage differences.
- Collaborative practice: Working with clients to co-create goals, approaches, and preferred outcomes.
- Strengths-based focus: Recognising and celebrating individual and collective strengths, not just managing the challenges.
The Positive Impact of Affirming Therapy
Affirming therapeutic support empowers neurodivergent individuals, couples, and professionals to develop greater self-acceptance, resilience, and curiosity. It can support the building of advocacy and communication skills, help to navigate relational or emotional challenges, and nurture a deeper sense of authenticity and wellbeing.
When therapy affirms who you are, growth becomes possible without the need to sacrifice your integrity or identity.
